The Imo state government this morning began the demolition of Eke Ukwu market in Owerri the state capital. Armed mobile police officers accompanied government officials that are carrying out the demolition.
The state governor, Rochas Okorocha and residents of the state have been at loggerheads after he disclosed plans by his administration to demolish the market due to the serious traffic trading activities that the market causes along the road.
Indigenes of the state have argued that the market is part of their traditional heritage which should not be demolished but rather be upgraded to a shopping mall.
Violence erupted as the demolition occurred during the exercise , eye witnesses say the Federal Medical Center in Owerri turned into a military hospital where several people with bullet wounds were rushed in after getting shot at by the army during violent protests.
A 10 year who had gone out to assist his mother at her shop was reportedly killed by a stray bullet.
