On Wednesday, not less than 1,000 disabled persons in Imo took to the streets in protest. With one voice, they blocked the warehouse roundabout, Owerri and brought the city to a grinding halt over what they described as maltreatment meted to them by the state government.
President of Imo State branch of disabled persons association, Dr Stanley Nwachukwu, said the association had decided to embark on a 1week protest against the “inhuman treatment” being given out to them by the Imo state government. He said they wanted to let the world know what their plight.
According to details enclosed in a letter addressed to Governor Rochas Okorocha on October 23, 2013, they appealed to clergy men and citizens of the state to mount pressure on the governor to release their three years subvention arrears, totaling N31.2 million.
IMO STATE BLOG recalls that sometime in November last year (2012), over 5,000 physically challenged persons in Owerri came out to protest the non-payment of their salaries and allowances by the government. They demanded the payment of their outstanding salaries and allowances and the sack of the Governor’s Special Assistant on Disabled Persons, Mrs Kate Okolie.
