Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher shot his
girlfriend and himself on Saturday, police have confirmed.
The Kansas City Police Department says that Belcher, 25
, shot and killed his girlfriend and then drove to Arrowhead
Stadium where he shot himself in front of his coach and
general manager, ESPN reports.
According to TMZ, police say Belcher shot Kasandra M
Perkins, 22, multiple times and that her mother witnessed
the fatal shooting. The couple leave behind a 3-month-old
baby girl.
"When the officers arrived, when they were pulling up, they
actually observed a black male who had a gun to his head
and he was talking to a couple of coaches out in the parking
lot," said police spokesman Darin Snapp."As officers pulled
up, and began to park, that's when they heard the gunshot
and it appears the individual took his own life."
"We can confirm that there was an incident at Arrowhead
earlier this morning," the Chiefs said in a statement. "We are
cooperating with authorities in their investigation."
TMZ adds that GM Scott Pioli and head coach Romeo
Crennel tried to prevent Belcher from committing additional
violence, and that Belcher thanked them for all they had
done for him before the self-inflicted gunshot.
"There is nothing profound or comforting to say that can
help us understand or explain a situation like this," George
Atallah of the NFL Players Association Tweeted Saturday.
"We have been in touch with players. At a time like this, we
can only come together as a family and as a community."
