A Bill for a law to establish Imo State University of Science and Technology, Egbema, has passed second reading in the state legislature.
According to its chief sponsor and member representing Ohaji/Egbema state constituency, Mr. Emmanuel Orie, “the state has the highest annual enrolment in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, UTME”. Host, Gov Rochas Okorocha Orie expressed regrets that Imo candidates do not secure sufficient placements in the existing tertiary institutions across the country. “Should the new university come on stream, it would help to a large extent, in addressing the insufficient admission opportunities available to Imolites, who are thirsty for higher education”, Orie said.
Contributing also, the Deputy Speaker, Chief Ugonna Ozuruigbo, affirmed that he had visited the Federal Government Skills Acquisition Centre, built by the Dr. Goodluck Jonathan administration, which is being proposed as the site for the new university. “I have visited the Federal Government Skills Acquisition Centre. The Centre has adequate facilities for the successful take off of the proposed university”, Ozuruigbo said.
In a similar development, the Assembly has started working on a Bill to stop the prevailing sex-for-marks syndrome in Imo State owned tertiary institutions. Its chief sponsor, Chief Arthur Egwim, representing Ideato North state constituency, expressed the hope that when passed into law, it would eliminate sexual harassment and witch hunting of female students by their lecturers. The Bill has been committed to the House Committee on Education for further scrutiny.
